Say Farewell to Kevin at the StalheimTime Finale

Posted on: April 4th, 2019 by Tai Renfrow

Saturday June 1st is StalheimTime. Named for his childhood home movies, this Finale concert is the Present Music Ensemble and Milwaukee’s Farewell to Present Music’s  founder, artistic director, creative curator, and sound-collage composer, Kevin Stalheim.

As the host of the iconic Artist Series at the Pabst, a classical chamber-music series that ran for many years, the Pabst Theater is the perfect venue for StalheimTime; Both the Pabst and the concert will be a reflection of the past that hosts brand-new music today.

Stalheim’s program for this “Thank You” concert brings some of his favorite contemporary classic ensemble music back to Milwaukee. The works performed by the Ensemble serve as a reminder of the world-renowned composers Stalheim brought to Milwaukee – including John Adams and Elena Kats-Chernin – to write the more than 65 new works commissioned by Milwaukeeans and premiered by Present Music over his 37 season tenure. Audience members will delight in joyful pandemonium as things go bump in the night during Donald Erb’s multimedia extravaganza, Souvenir.

Stalheim’s gratitude extends beyond the world of contemporary music to all the Milwaukee artists, singers, rappers, poets, dancers, improvisers, film addicts, and performers who have contributed their talents to his concerts over the years. Stalheim says, “the really great part of collaborators is involving different audiences in one place, hearing and seeing things they love alongside something they have never seen or heard before.”

In true Present Music fashion, the evening includes performances by community participants, including Danceworks, and Quasimondo, plus a special surprise for some of our old friends! Present Music concertgoers will recognize the work of Melissa Dorn, contributor of this season’s vivid graphic artwork, on display before the concert. Dorn reflects on this season’s partnership saying, “I feel very much a part of the PM community. This year I was able to contribute to the overall concert experience by sharing my artwork. It has now graced the cover of concert programs and I’ve been able to exhibit it at each of the concerts this year.”

Come join Kevin Stalheim, the Present Music family, and the very best of Milwaukee’s music, performing arts, and visual arts communities in celebrating the city’s surprising (and continuing!) love of the creation and performance of New Music! This season finale concert provides the chance to share the visions, music, and other delights of StalheimTime.
